reasons why this happened when it did. first, we're told that communications with jimmy lee dykes broke down in the day leading up to the raid and the more important reason, they saw he had a gun and he had to go in when they did to save ethan. ethan is safe. this is a photograph of the 5-year-old being taken to a hospital after being held hostage for nearly a week in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama. >> he is doing fine. he's laughing, joking, playing, eating. things that you would expect a normal 5 to 6-year-old young man to do. he's very brave. he's very lucky, and the success story is that he is out safe and doing great. >> reporter: the dramatic end came after officers saw 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes holding a weapon. they felt they could not hold off any longer. >> at this point, fbi agents, fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child. >> dykes was killed during the operation. a witness in the area describes what he heard. >> i heard a big boom, and then i heard -- i believe i heard rifle shots. >> reporter: how loud of a boom?

reported last hour that jimmy lee dykes still has the little 6-year-old boy inside the bunker on his property, stemming from the alleged bus attack that happened 4:00 yesterday afternoon. >> as we talked about earlier it is unclear if there's any connection between the alleged shooter and the 6-year-old boy, if they're related in any way and there are reports that that little boy is doing fine, that he's been fed and i guess gotten some medicine as well but beyond that it's unclear. what a bizarre story. we'll keep watching that one as well. >>> we're watching wall street, too, where we could hit an all-time high. stocks closed high we are the dow settling 50 points away from the 14,000 mark, 00 points shy of an all-time high, s&p 500 closed at 1508, 16 points from a record high. christine has a look at that for us. >> good morning, stocks have been rising for five years, it's been a five-year bull market and just now people are starting to get convinced. you see lots of money coming into the market, very close to all-time highs. the dow within 210 points of all-time highs. what is h

jimmy lee dykes wants or his motivation, but they have told us what the 5-year-old, ethan wants, and it puts it in perspective if you don't have young children in your life, the priorities of a child. he requested a red hot wheels car and cheese-itz crackers. those were delivered along with more food and medications yesterday. some students will go back to class. some schools have been closed since tuesday when the bus driver, charles poland, "whose funeral was yesterday. >> the children will be asking a lot of questions. i have seen some on the street. some are afraid to get back on the buses, but we have to encourage them and uplift them, in spite of what's going on. we have to let them know, you know, that they are here for an education, don't worry about that. >> reporter: i spoke with a local school bus driver and she says drivers in the district have met and will work on official safety procedures in the event a person gets on the school bus with a weapon. we're expecting the next official update at noon eastern. john. >> victor blackwell in midland city. thank you for kee
